Alfredo Caxaj is the founder and producer of Sunfest, the second largest music festival in Canada. Every July, Sunfest attracts more than 225,000 people contributing millions to London’s economy. The Globe and Mail named the festival one of the country’s 100 best summer events. Alfredo arrived from Guatemala in 1985 and worked at London’s Cross Cultural Learner Centre, helping new Canadians. It was there, working with people from around the world, that he envisioned a festival featuring the world’s best musicians. He joined forces with Herb Bayley and Sunfest was born in 1995. While many festivals book one or two “world musicians” each year, Sunfest specializes in world music. Performers have included international stars Céu (Brazil), Seun Kuti and Egypt 80 (Nigeria), Rokia Traoré (Mali) and Andy Palacia & the Garifuna Collective. The festival has featured a who’s who of Canadian musicians, like Samba Squad, Le Vent du Nord, Amanda Martinez, and Jesse Cook.
